VISION

Mechanical Engineering Department aspires to become:
  • The first choice for the best students,
  • The place of choice for the best faculty,
  • The place where the graduates can be employed by the industry of their choice or become entrepreneurs,
  • A place that can generate its own resources ,
  • A place that has the highest image in society
MISSION

OBJECTIVES
The Department strives To fullfil the Mission, the Department is committed
1 to graduate contemporary ME’s who will be able to work in different industries where they can add value, have the qualities to progress to top level management 11 to attract high quality students.
12 to offer a flexible undergraduate program.
to educate undergraduate students
13 who have mastered the fundamental notions and principles of ME discipline,
14 who are able to independently learn various applications, examine, critically evaluate and find solutions,
15 who are open to team work, inquisitive, innovative and take initiatives,
16 who perform effectively through oral, written and graphical communication, are sociable, well rounded and have broad interests,
17 who are aware of their professional and ethical responsibilities.
2 to graduate MS level ME’s who know well and are able to apply the fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering and their specialty areas; to develop PhD students who can do research creatively, develop new knowledge in the global context and can share this through publications and other means. 21 to attract high quality graduate students.
22 to offer a rich graduate program.

23 who can appreciate the value of and benefit from scientific and technical publications,
24 who are in touch with current scientific and technological world,
25 who can engage in multi directional research,
26 who can share and discuss with, and enthusiastically transfer the results of this multi directional research to appropriate parties.
3 to develop globally acceptable new knowledge and be able to apply it appropriately and creatively to improve Turkey’s scientific and technological know-how. 31 to contribute to scientific environment at BU, as a whole.

To realize the Objectives, the Department plans,
111 to keep the undergraduate quota within -0%,+10% limits
112 to introduce additional elective slots in the curriculum to allow for HSS and Admin. Sci. sequences
113 to start co-op program
114 to establish award systems for good students
115 to develop systematic relations with student representatives
121 to evaluate the course contents, conduction, compatibility and success of basic courses in the curriculum
122 to emphasize use of computers (tools such as excel, word as well as modeling)
123 to follow up computer availability and keep it at a satisfactory level
131 to adopt “learning by doing” approach; expand the use web environment
141 to improve senior project course to satisfy both students and faculty.
142 to establish the links of senior project course with industry
143 to introduce mentoring - informing and guiding along the profession

152 to add to courses (in particular to project courses) written and oral presentation techniques

253 to implement the requirement to prepare a presentation in the ASME format for MS students

322 to encourage faculty to visit research institutions in the summer

374 to be able to offer different alternatives to non standard PhD candidates

383 to determine the need for equipment (teaching + research)
384 to determine the need for technicians and support personnel
411 to make the arrangements for part time instructors from industry to offer at least one special topics course every semester.
412 to offer continuing education courses/life long learning courses in cooperation with members from industry
413 to attempt to identify strategies in mechanical engineering and priorities of Turkey, in cooperation with industry, state and universities.
421 to be able to offer at least three LLL activities per year, at the and of five years
422 to carry the specialties of the Department to the WEB to provide an infrastructure for continuing education activities
431 to establish joint laboratories with industry in areas of excellence of the Department and to create know-how and technology in the university which can be applied towards product development
432 to have cooperation with and consulting to industry one day per week (at least five members are expected to have developed such links within five years)
433 to support other higher education institutions
511 to have TQM methodologies routinely applied within the department and lead the university to adopt it
512 to go through ABET 2000 accreditation procedures
513 to make self-assessment based on outputs
514 to develop mechanisms to have objective evaluations such as GRE, FE, PE..
521 to keep in touch with the alumni; to arrange yearly feed back meetings
522 to continue more actively with the industrial Advisory Board and to include non-alumni business–men
523 to arrange a search conference to reach a larger range of stakeholders
